You're new to the vibrant Eindhoven region, perhaps for your work at one of the many innovative companies here, like ASML, or another technology leader. You've likely already noticed that life here is different from what you're used to. This transition, this adjustment to a new culture and a new job, is what we call culture shock. Know that you're not alone in experiencing this in this dynamic environment. As a coach based in this region (and someone who was born and raised nearby in Geldrop), I've observed the challenges many international professionals face during their transition.
That Direct Way of Speaking:
Just like in the rest of the Netherlands, you'll find that people in the Eindhoven region are often very direct in their communication. What might sound blunt or even impolite in your culture is often the norm here. It's helpful to know that this is usually not the intention. It's a way of being efficient and honest, especially in the often fast-paced and results-oriented work environment here. Try to understand the intent behind this direct style, and you'll find it helps in your communication here.
The Work Culture: Independence and Initiative in a High-Tech Setting:
In the Eindhoven region, with its strong focus on technology and innovation, independence and initiative are highly valued in the workplace. Whether you're in research, development, or production, you'll find that you're expected to be proactive and make your own decisions within your tasks. This might be different from what you're used to. Trust your abilities and don't be afraid to voice your opinion in this dynamic environment.
The Bicycle: More Than Just Transportation in the City and Surroundings:
In and around Eindhoven, the bicycle is also a ubiquitous and important part of daily life. The well-developed cycling paths and the habit of using bikes for commuting and leisure are a striking aspect for many newcomers. See it not just as a way to get around the city and surrounding villages, but also as a typical Dutch experience that gives you the chance to discover the region in a different way.
How We Interact: Sobriety and Brabantian "Gezelligheid":
The social interaction in the Eindhoven region, rooted in the Brabantian culture, might initially feel a bit nuchter or reserved. This down-to-earth and realistic approach is a common thread in Dutch culture. Building friendships often takes time, and the way social connections are formed can be different from what you're used to. But rest assured, beneath that sometimes-reserved exterior often lies genuine hospitality and the typically Brabantian "gezelligheid" – a cozy and relaxed atmosphere that you'll hopefully experience soon, especially as you learn the local customs.
